Transatlanticism
Netherlands x Reader
Please Note This is a songfic for the song Transatlanticism by Death Cab for Cutie, so you may want to listen to the song before reading the story.
The Atlantic was born today and I'll tell you how
The clouds above opened up and let it out
It was a cold and rainy morning in Amsterdam and you were currently lying in the warmth of your boyfriend's bed. As usual he was gone when you opened your (e/c) orbs.
'Smoking.' You thought bitterly as you removed the covers from your body and climbed to your feet.
The cold air in the room rushed to meet your nude form and shivers began to wrack through your body. You quickly reached down, grabbed the shirt Tim had discarded the night before, and slipped it over your head.
The oversized T-shirt advertising some poplar Dutch band offered little warmth, but it was better than nothing, so clad in it you made your way downstairs to look for the Dutchman.
You had something to tell him, something important that you had been meaning to tell him for weeks now.
You had been transferred to America.
I was standing on the surface of a perforated sphere
When the water filled every hole
And thousands upon thousands made an ocean
Making islands where no island should go
Oh no
After several minutes of searching you found the tall, shirtless man standing on the awning covered back porch with his pipe in his hand, and his acid wash jeans unbuttoned so you could see a bit of the fabric from his dark red boxers sticking out.
His olive green eyes watched the rain pour down and create puddles on the ground as he blew out clouds of smoke.
You quickly slid the door open and stepped out onto the porch, causing him to turn towards you.
"Goedemorgen, liefje." He said simply before wrapping an arm around your shoulders and pulling you close.
"Goedemorgen." You responded quietly.
He glanced at you and immediately knew something was wrong. "What's up?" He asked in his usual bored tone before taking another puff of his pipe.
You bit your lip. You knew you had to tell him, you couldn't just keep him in the dark about your transfer forever, but you were worried about how he'd react, would he break up with you right then and there, would he try to make a long distance relationship work, or would he insist on going with you?
"Tell me." He urged, pulling you a little closer to his muscular body.
"I'm being transferred for work next month." You squeaked out.
The Dutchman chuckled. "With the face you were making I thought you were going to tell me someone was dead." He took another puff of his pipe before speaking again. "So, where are they sending you?" He asked.
"That's just it, Tim, they're transferring me to America." As you spoke you could feel tears pooling in your (e/c) orbs.
Tim's pipe clattered to the ground and he quickly wrapped his strong arms around you. "We'll make it work, ______. I promise." He said as he allowed you to cry on his bare chest.
Most people were overjoyed they took to their boats
I thought it less like a lake and more like a moat
Everyone was happy about your transfer, not because you were leaving, but because it meant you were moving up in the company and would earn a lot more money than you currently were, and since your company was constantly flying your friends out for meetings in the US they would be able to see you often, but you and Tim felt differently about it.
The two of you thought this promotion a curse and the Atlantic a moat keeping him away from you, his princess trapped in the highest tower of the castle called America.
The rhythm of my footsteps crossing flood lands to your door have been silenced forever more
The distance is quite simply much too far for me to row
It seems farther than ever before
Oh no
You had been living in America for nearly a year now, and you hated it just as much as you had the day you arrived.
You hated it because you could no longer hear Tim's heavy footsteps as he climbed the stairs at night, you could no longer touch his handsome face, or feel the comforting warmth of his strong arms around you.
Sure, the two of you could communicate through Facebook, Skype, text messages, phone calls, and letters, but it just wasn't the same as having him right there with you and Tim felt the same. He missed you just as much as you missed him. He missed you smile and your laughter, your voice, the way you could brighten up his day just by walking into the room, and, heck, he even missed your constant complaining about his smoking habits, but you were so far away and even though he spoke to you every morning it just wasn't the same.
You felt so far away from each other, you wanted, no, needed to be closer.
I need you so much closer
After your daily Skype call Tim was off to work.
He worked for an American company that had several branches in the Netherlands and luckily he was good friends with his boss, Matthias Køhler.
About a month ago Tim had told the Danish man about how your transfer to New York had been taking quite the toll on him and the energetic Dane had been eager to lend a hand by requesting Tim be transferred to a branch in New York. Now that the request was put in all they had to do was wait for it's approval, which was almost guaranteed since Matthias was very close with the company president, Alfred F. Jones.
I need you so much closer
When the Dutchman arrived at work that day Matthias was waiting for him in his office.
"Hey, you're finally here!" The blue eyed man said with a wide grin. "I have great news for you!" He added.
"Ja, sorry, I was running a bit late the morning." Tim said, sheepishly scratching his head. "What's this great news of yours?" His fingers were crossed that it was about the transfer.
"Pft, don't worry about that, I was late this morning too." The Dane said, sounding a bit too cheerful. "Right, right, so the good news is that your transfer went through! You're scheduled to start over there in two months, so make sure you're ready by then."
Tim was overjoyed when he heard the news, he was finally going to be able to see ______ again. "Dank je wel, Matthias." He said. The tall man would have said more, but he was so happy that his vocabulary had up and disappeared.
The Dane chuckled. "Don't mention it, Tim." He said with his usual bright smile. "Ah, well I'd love to stay and chat, but I've got a pile of paper work to take care of." He said before slipping out of Tim's office and returning to his own.
For the rest of the day a bright smile was plastered on Tim's lips.
I need you so much closer
That night when Tim arrived home he thought of everything he needed to do before he went off to America.
First, he needed to take care of the house, he didn't want to sell it in case the two of you ever wanted to return to the Netherlands which meant he would need to find someone to take care of it. The Dutchman figured he had three options, he could rent it out, he could let his brother stay there, or he could let his sister live there with her annoying Spanish boyfriend, Antonio.
As much as he disliked Antonio he knew the Spaniard and his sister had fallen on hard times so he decided to call them up and see if they wanted to live in the house while he was in America.
He punched in his sister's phone number on his cell phone and surprisingly she picked up on the second ring. "Hey, Bella, it's Tim." He said.
"Oh, hey, broer! What's up?" She asked cheerfully.
"I'm being transferred to America in two months and I'm looking for someone to stay at the house while I'm away, so I was wondering if you and Antonio were interested." He stated plainly.
"Yes, defiantly! It would be such a huge help to not have to worry about rent!" She cried happily.
Though Bella couldn't see it, her older brother was smiling. "Great, I'll be leaving the furniture here though, so keep that in mind."
"Right." Bella said.
"Well, I'll talk to you again later." Tim said, ready to hang up the phone.
"Wait, broer, before you hang up, thanks. This means a lot to us." She said.
"Yeah, don't sweat it, zus." And with that the Dutchman hung up and retired for the night.
I need you so much closer
Everyday Tim would drop subtle hints to you over your Skype calls that he was coming to America, but you never picked up on them until one night when you logged on and saw several suitcases laying on the bed you used to share with your Dutch boyfriend.
"Are you going somewhere?" You asked.
He nodded. "Yeah, I'm leaving later today." He a small, uncharacteristic smirk forming on his lips.
"You sure have a lot of suitcases…Where are you going?" You asked, curious.
"Back to the girl I love." He said plainly.
You finally understood all his little hints. "Tim!" You cried happily. "You're coming to America?"
He nodded. "Yeah."
"What about work?" You asked, suddenly worried.
"I'm being transferred to the branch in New York City." Tim informed you as he ran a hand through his spiked hair.
You felt hot, happy tears start to run down your cheeks. "I'm so glad." You cried as you tried to wipe them away.
I need you so much closer
As promised Tim had texted you his flight information and you had taken the day off work so you could meet him at the airport and spend it with him.
As you waited by the baggage claim all sorts of things were running through your head.
"Are you waiting for someone too?" A young woman holding the hand of her blonde son asked with a small smile.
You nodded. "Yes, my boyfriend is flying in today. It's been a little over a year since I last saw him, so I'm a bit nervous." You admitted. "Who are you waiting for?"
She smiled. "I can see why you'd be nervous! My husband is coming back from a business trip, he's only been gone a few weeks though." She responded.
I need you so much closer
Tim frowned. Long plane rides he could deal with, but long plane rides in coach with three extremely loud crying children weren't exactly his cup of tea. However, he knew salvation was close now.
I need you so much closer
You and the woman, whose name you learned was Lili Zwingli, continued to chat while you waited for Tim's plane to arrive.
"They're running a bit late." You said when you noticed the time on one of the many clocks in the airport.
Lili nodded. "Yeah, I think the flight was delayed a bit this morning though, so there's no need to worry." She assured you.
I need you so much closer
"We will now start the descent, so please return to your seats and fasten your seat belts." One of the flight attendants announced.
Tim perked up at this, finally after the longest seven hours in his life he was going to be able to see _______.
I need you so much closer
The descent felt like it took forever, so when Tim felt the plane hit the runway he wanted to jump out of his seat and exit the it right then and there, but of course he couldn't because that damn seatbelt sign was still on, so he waited patiently for it to turn off.
I need you so much closer
Once the plane had stopped completely and the seatbelt sign had turned off Tim quickly got out of his seat, grabbed his carryon from the overhead compartment, and joined the mob of people attempting to exit the large aircraft.
I need you so much closer
Once he was off the plane and had cleared customs Tim hastily made his way to the baggage claim. He had tried to run there, but a few TSA members had yelled at him, so he opted for speed walking instead.
When he arrived at the spinning silver wheel he saw the most glorious sight he had seen in a year, you, you with your (h/l) (h/c) hair and (s/c) skin.
Your back was facing him and you were chatting with a short woman and a little boy.
He approached slowly and gently wrapped his strong arms around your waist. "Ik heb je gemist, liefje." He whispered.
I need you so much closer
Upon hearing Tim's deep voice tears started to run down your cheeks. You quickly turned around to face him so you could crash your lips into his.
The kiss was long and passionate and was only broken when the two of you needed oxygen.
"I'm so glad to have you back." You cried.
The Dutchman smiled and gently wiped away your tears with his thumb. "I'm glad to be back. Ik hou van je." He said.
"Ik hou ook van jou." You responded.
He quickly bent down and placed a kiss on the top of your head before taking your hand and walking over to the baggage claim so the two of you could get his things.
You saw Lili flash you a grin before hurrying off with a tall man who had jaw length blonde hair that you assumed was her husband
So come on, come on (x4)
"Come on, let's get out of here and go home." You said as you helped Tim with his suitcases .
He just gave a nod in response.

You walked down the street, to the park. You stopped as you came by the pond, there were sweet little ducks just swimming around so you took the pice of bread that you had carried there just for them and started breaking it up into little pieces and throwing it into the pond, you then turned around to sit on the bench to watch them for a little while.
You had been sitting there for a few minutes shivering occasionally due to the cold, you hadn't expected it to be so cold today so you didn't bother wearing much of a coat. You noticed a few people walk by every now and again, one being an old man you knew so you waved at him and received one b
